Institutsgeschichte

The Library of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was established by the historian Count József Teleki, the first President of the Academy, who in 1826 offered his 30.000 volume library to the Academy.

The Library began operation in 1831, simultaneously with the Academy itself, and now is one of the country’s most important sources of scientific information for basic research. As a general library of national character also specializing in particular fields, it collects all literature concerned with Science of languages and literature, Classical Studies, Oriental Studies, Science policy and Research Management.

The separate Oriental Collection came into being in 1951. For further information see: www.mtak.hu
